The Globalization of T20 Cricket
The advent of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 was a seminal moment in the history of cricket which led to a number of franchise leagues being created, increasing commercialisation and growth in popularity in the shorter form of the game.
With the tournament’s creation coinciding with the early growth of social media platforms, the IPL and its teams have been able to capitalise on the huge popularity of the sport on the subcontinent and now have large audiences across channels such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
In this report we looked at how the IPL compares on these channels with other, more historic, major sporting tournaments, what the audience numbers say about the market share of T20 globally and what the potential is for future growth.
